Literature Text

The first thing you remember is pain. It shoots through your head like a bullet, squeezing your skull and applying pressure right behind your eyes. You wonder why you feel like you got ran over by a truck.

The next thing you feel is more pain but, this time, it’s pain from your eyes. You peel your eyelids open very much like you would peel a band-aid and you almost screech at the bright light that shone in your face. You wonder why it’s there.

Your hearing is blurred, like someone had stuffed cotton balls into your ears, but you know someone is talking to you. Your vision is also impaired and it takes you a few blinks to finally see clearly.

By this time, your arm is up to shield you from the glaring light. Your head is still pounding, drumming, and you are unaware of where you are. There is a dull pain settling everywhere on your body. Every time you moved, you could feel your joints protest sorely as if they had not moved for millennia.

“—[Nickname]?” Despite the fact that your hearing isn’t the best at the moment, you can still hear someone calling someone else. The name is foreign to you yet recognizable at the same time, like you had heard it before, once upon a million years past. As your eyesight clears, you realise this stranger is looking to you.

His eyes are relieved and flooded with tears, his mouth upturned into a bright grin. His tan cheeks are tearstained as well and his chocolate hair is ruffled as if he had slept in a very inconvenient place.

He looks a lot like your friend, a friend long forgotten. Though, despite the fact that you harbored odd melancholic feelings for this friend, you're pretty sure you only just saw him yesterday.

Pushing this thought aside, you finally sit up and grasp at your head. You try to tug at your other arm but it gets caught and a pain shoots up from your hand.

It makes you cringe, your eyes shut as you register all this pain. Pain from your head, pain from your eyes, pain from your chest... What had happened to you?

As you desperately try and curl into a ball, you clutch at the nearest thing to you which is the bed sheets and you feel people crowding around you as you try and adjust to this havoc. They’re suffocating you.

Everything is so unfamiliar, so new. You feel the previous pain in your chest tighten, your breathing shallows, everything is unclear. Your mind is zooming at 500 miles per second, trying frantically to recall what had led to this.

“[Name]!” The voice is familiar, deeper than you last remember but the melodic calming feeling is the same. You know this person, don’t you?

Finally, you look up to see someone you had not expected to see. He, too, is someone you feel like you've met before. It probably had something to do with those green eyes and that brown shoulder length hair. Who did you know wore a flowery hair accessory?

“D-Daniel?” A stutter escapes your dry lips and your voice is grated, hoarse, as if unused for centuries. Your throat feels thoroughly dry and it hurts to speak but you could not help yourself.

It seems, whoever this was, Daniel or not, was pleased by your reaction because he smiles and nods “Please, calm down. Everything is alright.”

You're 100% sure that he's not your friend, Daniel, but maybe his name is Daniel too. That's a strange coincidence. Besides, he really couldn't be the Daniel you're thinking of. For one, despite your fuzzy memories, the Daniel you knew was years younger.

This familiar stranger being a male aside, his tone is motherly and soothing to your pained ears. You don’t let his accent escape you though, it’s memorable and you’re somewhat accustomed to it but you do not know where you had heard it before...

You find yourself nodding finally after a long pause only to pull your legs up against your chest when another stranger enters the room. This time, he doesn’t look familiar and he was more around your grandfather’s age rather than the age of the men around you. You didn’t like your grandfather.

You’re scared.

The boy from earlier, the one with beautiful caramel eyes, notices this and takes your hand.
It comforts you—you’re unsure why—and this also makes you realise that the thing you had tugged at earlier was an IV tube. There was an IV attached to your hand as well as a heart monitor clip on your finger. You had gotten into enough accidents in the past year to know full well what those are.

“Ah, Ms. [L. Name]. I was alerted once you had awoken. Please, look at me.” You follow the instructions of this stranger only to be blinded once more by a flashlight in his hand.

You hiss, recoiling, and he looks oddly at you. You don’t mind that though and, instead, you tighten your hold on the other man’s hand.

“Ms. [L. Name], are you alright?”

At this question, you shake your head furiously. Suddenly, without your permission, your throat clenches and your eyes sting. The panicked feeling from earlier is returning, rising up your chest.

This unfamiliarity was so scary and you begged, wished anxiously, that it would end. Tears were spilling down your [s/c] cheeks and you’re curling up again.

What was going on?
